Luc Ngan lychee being protected geographical indication in Japan

The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has just granted a protection certificate for geographical indications for Luc Ngan lychee of Bac Giang province. This is the first of three products of Vietnam that are protected for geographical indications in Japan.

Before that, Bac Giang lychee was also successfully protected in many other countries such as China, Laos, Cambodia, Korea, Singapore, Australia and consumed in many countries around the world. The granting of geographical indication protection will create favorable conditions for Luc Ngan lychee to be exported to Japan and other markets.

In the production crop in 2021, the lychee area of Bac Giang province is expected to reach about 28,000 ha. In which, the area of early lychee is nearly 7,000 ha, lychee in main season is over 21,000 ha; production is expected to reach about 160,000 tons. The area of lychee produced according to VietGAP standard of the province is expected to reach over 15,000 ha; the one produced according to GlobalGAP standardis 338 ha.

This year, it is expected that about 250 hectares of lychee will be eligible for export to Japan. Currently, the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) is evaluating and appraising to issue regional codes in the near future.
